Lure some cheap friends out to activities on Free Fishing Day
By Brett Prettyman
TIGHT LINES

There has not been an official start to the fishing season in Utah since the state went to year-round angling back in the mid-1980s, although Memorial Day is an unofficial beginning for many anglers.

But another holiday-like day lures other anglers to hit the water: Free Fishing Day, a national event, will be observed in Utah on June 11.

For that one day, anglers don't need a license. However, that does not mean you can ignore fishing regulations. All rules posted in the 2005 fishing proclamation will be enforced, with the exception of the one requiring a valid fishing license.

So take advantage of Free Fishing Day by inviting that friend who is too cheap to buy a license, or by taking the neighborhood kids for a day on the lake. It is likely that streams, creeks and rivers will still be high, dangerous and unfishable by June 11 so avoid running water if you want a productive trip.

Here are a few Free Fishing Day events.

Logan -- Willow Park, 419 W. 700 South, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for children 14 and younger. Events include fishing (with equipment provided), fly tying, casting contests and fish crafts. Sponsored by the Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR), Cache Anglers and Project Wet.

Ogden -- The fourth annual Ogden City Free Family Fishing Fair is at the Ogden City Rodeo Stadium and West Stadium Park, 668 17th St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities include a children's fishing pond. Sponsored by Ogden City, DWR, Hawkwatch International, Ogden Nature Center and Utah State University.

Midway -- Wasatch Mountain State Park is hosting an event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children will be able to fish the park's pond with help from participants in the state's Dedicated Hunter program. Space is limited and registration is required. Call Wendy Wilson at 435-654-1791.

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area -- The U.S. Forest Service and the DWR will help children fish Moose Pond, Highway 44 near mile marker 9, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Steinaker reservoir -- A Casting Kids Competition will be held by the Utah Bass Federation at Steinaker, seven miles north of Vernal on U.S. Highway 191, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Duff and stuff with Miller

Johnny Miller claims to be a better angler than a golfer, so the Lovell Group recently announced an opportunity to golf and fish with 1973 U.S. Open Champion golfer Miller in Jackson Hole, Wyo., July 12-14.

For the cool price of $4,500, you can spend two days hanging out on the course or the river with Miller. Activities include a private golf clinic with Miller, a round of golf at Teton Pines Country Club, fishing on a private pond and a float on the South Fork of the Snake River.

The event is limited to 12 people. A $20,000 donation to the Johnny Miller Junior Golf Foundation will be made if the event is filled.
