The closing of the Villa Theatre was the most obvious change on the physical landscape of Utah cinema. Meanwhile, an art-film house opened in Trolley Square, and Mormon Cinema mapped out its future.

Ririe-Woodbury dance company performs "Lythic," part of a tour celebrating the work of dance pioneer Alwin Nikolais. The program was the highlight of Utah's year in dance.

Utah residents flocked to the Salt Lake City Main Library after it opened in February. The library makes an impressive physical impact on the city and has lured prominent writers to visit the state.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir was awarded the National Medal of Arts this year, one of many highlights in Utah's music world.

Pioneer Theatre Company showcased song and dance this year with musicals such as "Ragtime." Many of the stages in Utah featured unusual heroes: a transvestite rocker, a swordsman with a long nose and a bat boy.
