In the midst of trying to plan summer activities, be it for a day or a week? Indications are that more Utahns, with the high price of gasoline and continually shrinking time schedules, are planning to stay within their own borders this summer.
Ray Grass: Reservoir laws will improve fishing
It happened suddenly. Much sooner than expected. A week ago, they were reporting a thick ice cap on Strawberry. Now, despite cooler temperatures, the only solid structures on the surface of the water are boats. It seems the right winds combined with the right temperatures melted the ice, which was, indeed, thick not so long ago. In fact, the reports back on the first days of the month were that the ice was starting to "pull back." Even then, it was still considered safe to walk on, drill a hole through and drop in a bobber and silver lure with a chunk of night crawler attached.
Humanitarians at heart: The Mining & Metallurgical Society of America honors Salt Lake residents Don and Mary Hausen
The first couple to win a Gold Medal from the Mining & Metallurgical Society of America was Herbert and Lou Hoover, back in 1914. They were honored for their work in translating a 16th century mineralogy document from Latin into English. Herbert Hoover was the mining engineer, but Lou also had a scientific mind, and she spoke several languages. The Hoovers went on to become president and first lady.

Re-live history GOLDEN SPIKE ANNIVERSARY. The re-enactment of the driving of the Golden Spike will be Tuesday at the Golden Spike National Historic Site at Promontory. The visitors center opens at 8 a.m. Replicas of the Jupiter and No. 119 engines arrive at 9:30 a.m. The traditional commemorative program will begin at 11:30 a.m. The Re-enactment of the Driving of the Golden Spike will be at 12:20 p.m. The event celebrates the completion of the country's first transcontinental railroad May 10, 1869. Information: 435-471-2209. Dig dinosaurs? FOLLOW MONTANA'S DINOSAUR TRAIL. Thirteen museums, interpretive centers and field stations in 10 communities of eastern and central Montana have partnered to form the Montana Dinosaur Trail.
