During the third-annual Downtown Dine O´Round, 40 Salt Lake restaurants will offer a special three-course dinner for either $15 or $25 (drinks and tips are extra). The event runs Friday through Sept. 30.
There were 33 restaurants in the first Dine O´Round in 2003, begun as a way to lure people downtown at night, and to get them out of their "favorite-restaurant" rut.

NRC ruling wont end fight over N-wasteWASHINGTON — Utah officials say they are disappointed but not surprised that the Nuclear Regulation Commission ruled Friday to let a consortium of nuclear power utilities store nuclear waste on Goshute Tribal lands in Tooele County.
"I think we gave up on the NRC a long time ago," said Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah.

Messaging gets easier for deafSOUTH JORDAN — A free messaging service for the deaf promises to create 750 new Utah jobs and take handheld mobile devices to a whole new level.
Called IP Relay, the technology by Salt Lake-based Sorenson Communications allows deaf and hard-of-hearing people to place text calls through a mobile device like a BlackBerry, and then have those messages read aloud by a communications assistant to a hearing person.

Chinese writer translates very nicely — from FrenchDai Sijie, a Chinese novelist (and filmmaker) who speaks no English and writes his books in French, is on a conference call from Paris. His answers to my questions are being interpreted by a Frenchwoman who is slightly uncomfortable with English. She had never met him before today, and the conversation is a tense and often frustrating experience.

Smoking declines 25% among adults in UtahSmoking among Utah adults has dropped 25 percent since the state initiated aggressive tobacco prevention programs six years ago, according to a new report from the Utah Department of Health.
That’s 29,000 fewer smokers since 1999, credited largely to programs funded by the master settlement agreement between states and big tobacco companies, the report says.

The Base Realignment and Closure Commission submitted a final report to the president Thursday, including a recommendation that Deseret Chemical Depot remain open after it finishes its work with chemical weapons, provided a study finds it is feasible to use it to demilitarize conventional ammunition.

Finally retiring at 91 - Layton barber plans to hang up his clippers, razor after 70 yearsLAYTON — There is a sign, yellowed with age, that hangs above the mirror in LeRoy Terry’s barber shop.
Patrons chuckle when they see it, calling the sign an oddity or relic of the past. "Haircuts," it reads. "Adult: $3. Children under 14: $2.50."
For the past 24 years, those words have been posted inside Terry’s shop, a red brick building with no signage, located along Main Street in Layton.

Utah to file appeal of N-repository rulingUtah will file a federal appeal of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s granting a license to build a high-level nuclear repository in Tooele County.
That was the word Monday from Mike Lee, general counsel to Gov. Jon M. Huntsman. Last week, the NRC granted a license allowing construction of the facility by Private Fuel Storage.

Utahs air quality is clearing up, but work remainsState officials are claiming victory in a 25-year struggle over air pollution — but they warn Utah is close to violating two new health standards and must work hard to control those pollutants.
Rick Sprott, director of the Utah Division of Air Quality, said Monday that the state is submitting documentation to the Environmental Protection Agency to show that three former non-attainment areas — places that were cited for violating PM10 air pollution rules — are now in compliance.
